Say what? You read that right, friends. The purpose of social media is to keep existing customers informed–and coming back for more. It keeps you in front of your customer’s eyes, so they can see what you’re doing.
Let’s take a gander at McDonald’s again. Do you think they need to have a Facebook page to bring in new customers? I honestly don’t think they even need to advertise on TV to get new customers. But that’s not the point. Everyone has eaten at, or at least heard of Micky D’s. This is especially true here, in America.
We know and love the brand and the unhealthy food that we’re addicted to. There is so much we can learn from them because of their sheer size and success. I just checked their Facebook page, and they had over 29.5 million likes. There was also a Micky D’s Egypt and Pakistan page that were listed–each having 1.2 million and over 500k (respectively) likes.
What???? I didn’t even know they had restaurants over there!
Anyway, they don’t have to market their Facebook page to people who’ve never heard of them before. You know why? Because it doesn’t work that way. It doesn’t work because people aren’t going to Facebook and typing in “cheeseburger” hoping to get a new idea for where they should eat. McDonald’s counts on the fact that if you like their page, you’ve already eaten there. If you don’t like their food, why would you like their page?
If they are looking to bring in a new audience, not like they have too, they are going to position themselves on the first page of the search engines. If you go to Google and type in “chicken nuggets” guess who ranks in the top 5 sites?
So I say again, social media is not for bringing in new customers. Does it happen? I’m sure it does. But that isn’t the main goal.
While I’m not certain what their goal is with a Facebook page, I can be certain that I get hungry each time I go to their page. Well, I’ve never gone there before now, but I sure am getting hungry.
Huh, I wonder if that’s what their goal is… Remember, they want to keep their food in front of you. So you are encouraged to like their page. And then they litter it with juicy looking pictures and videos to make you want to go there and buy some food.
Stay tuned, because this is a two part post, the rest will come out tomorrow.
