How to blog with ADD

Being a blogger takes a lot of work. It isn’t for everyone. There is a lot of skill that you need to have, as well as the ability to put on many different hats. One thing that people don’t think about, is how to blog if you have a learning disability. I’m not talking about hard core, severe mental disabilities. What I mean, is dyslexia or ADD. Or any of the other learning disabilities out there.

I don’t have dyslexia, so I can’t really speak about that. However, I have learned how to blog with ADD. In fact, I was first diagnosed with it during my second time at attempting the first grade. Yeah, that’s right. I repeated the first grade. They said that I wasn’t ready. And that I wasn’t mature enough. What a crock of turds…

Listen, everyone can learn. The trick is, how you teach that person? But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, because this post is not about how I discovered my learning abilities. Rather, it’s about how I cope with focusing on something and being a blogger.

They dub ADD as a learning disability, but as we’ve just learned, learning isn’t a problem that I have. I can learn. I can be taught. The main problem, however, is focus. At the heart of ADD is the inability to focus on one thing for an extended amount of time.

If you asked Kristen, my wife, she’d tell you that I drive her nuts. Insane, even. Why? Because I cannot focus on one thing for any period of time. So, here are a few tips that I’ve come across that enable me to blog successfully

  1. Come up with a plan, and stick to it. I’m going to be absolutely honest here. I hate planning. No, I loathe it. Seriously. Ask my wife. She can’t get me to plan anything. You know why I hate the traditional plan? Because it’s by the book. If you ask my wife what her plan is, it is 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. What I mean, is that each one takes place in order, and each number is finished before the next is even considered. I don’t plan that way. My plan looks like this 1-2-3-4-5. Or 1-3-2-4-5. My point, is that I know what I have to do each day and move from one to the next. There is no particular order, and sometimes they overlap. And you know what? Chaos is great because it allows me to get things done. When I get bored with number 1, I start working on number 2–immediately (hence the dashes in my numbers above). I know that I will eventually work my way back around to number 1 to finish it up.
  2. Eliminate distractions. When focus is your problem, having the kids destroying each other, or the house, in the background is prolly not a good idea. So, find a time to work when you can focus on what you have to do. Is email your problem? Turn it off. Your stupid phone? Put it on silent. Get creative here.
  3. Break the silence. Or keep the silence. Everyone is different, so what works for me may not work for you. In fact, I’m so crazy that I’m different each day. One day I may need some music to help me focus and the next I may be singing each word losing my concentration.
  4. Take a break. Every so often, you need to get out of your office. Go look at the scenery outside. Go for a quick run around your yard. Walk you dog. Sometimes, the best way to build your concentration is to break it on purpose. After you’re done, you’ll be refreshed and ready to work with a cleared out brain.
  5. Chew a piece of gum. Sometimes the rhythmic chewing of gum helps me stay focused. Why? Because if I’m not doing something rhythmic, I’m tapping on my desk. I can’t help it. I’m a one man band, and my fingers are the instruments. Drives people nuts. But, it soothes me and allows me to concentrate for some reason.
